  FAITHFULNESS IN BIBLE READING

RUSTY (Enters) Oh, no! I can’t find my Bible. My Sunday school teacher

said we’d get a prize if we brought our Bibles to church. I think I’ll

ask my big brother Piper, if he’s seen it anywhere. Piper, (Piper enters)

have you seen my Bible anywhere?

PIPER    No, Rusty! Didn’t you have it when you went to church last Sunday?

RUSTY Yes, but I brought it home and put it somewhere!

PIPER    Did you look in your room?

RUSTY I looked in there some, but not real hard!

PIPER    Look in there again, it’s bound to be in there somewhere!

RUSTY (Rusty exits and makes the sound of toys being thrown around) I found

              it, Piper! (Rusty reenters)

PIPER    Rusty, let me ask you something. How often do you read your Bible?

RUSTY I read it last Sunday in church!

PIPER    That’s not enough, Rusty. You should read it every day!

RUSTY But, I don’t understand a lot of it!

PIPER    When I was your age, I found that I couldn’t understand a lot of it, but I

made it a point to read it, anyway. God hasn’t commanded us to

understand all of His Word, but He does ask us to study it. In

II Timothy 2:15, it says, “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a

workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of

              Truth.”

RUSTY You know, I do feel ashamed that I haven’t read my Bible like I should,

but how will it help me now?

PIPER    In Psalms 119:11, it says, “Thy Word have I hid in my heart that I

              might not sin against thee.”

RUSTY You make it pretty easy to understand.

PIPER    All I did was quote those verses as they appear in the Bible!

RUSTY You know, I might be able to understand a lot of it as I read it!

PIPER    I think you’ll be surprised when you really get into it. There’s one

more verse I’d like to share with you, Joshua 1:8. “This book of the

law shall not depart out of thy mouth, but thou shalt meditate therein

day and night, that thou mayest observe to do all that is written

therein: For then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou

              shalt have good success.”

RUSTY You mean, if I read my Bible every day, I’ll learn how to live a better

              life?

PIPER    Yes, Rusty! You should put your Bible on the lamp stand by your bed

and start reading a chapter every time before you go to sleep. Proverbs

is full of ideas on how to live a better life!

RUSTY Isn’t that the book about wisdom?

PIPER    Yes, it is!

RUSTY I’ll go ahead and put my Bible right by my bed, where I won’t lose it

again and read it like you said!

PIPER    Good for you, Rusty! (Both exit)
